A free-wheeling survey of some of the best juice bars the UAE has to offer.
Hidden among the skincare products on the ground floor at Harvey Nichols, Squeeze & Teas is just the place to boost your energies if you've been bashing the plastic in the summer sales. It offers fruit juices and nice cups of tea, as well as coffee and milkshakes. Among the single juices and smoothies are "energisers", which apparently aid detoxification and combat sluggishness, and antioxidant drinks packed with vitamin C. The Immune Booster Green Goddess (Dh30) combines apple, cucumber, celery, spinach and parsley with some fresh ginger to give it a spicy kick. Shots of wheatgrass (which are believed to contain all the nutrients found in a 1kg portion of leafy green vegetables) are also available. Harvey Nichols, Mall of the Emirates, 04 409 8888.
D'lush can't help but catch your eye with its smooth white decor, splashes of colour and its rather pretentious slogan: "Deluxe Beverage Joint". With frozen lemonades like the Mojito with mint, and the Blue Ray with non-alcoholic blue curaçao, you'll feel suitably refreshed on a hot day. If you're looking for something a little more substantial, try one of the smart shakes made without milk - the Blueberry Burst is a tangy melange of blueberry, banana, cherry and apple juice. Dubai Festival City, 04 232 9696.
Tonic Juice Bars are a riot of colour, with bunches of bananas and spiky pineapples all over the place, so you'll easily be able to spot one when your body is yearning for juice. The variety is impressive, with Creamy Smoothies, Tropical Quenchers and Ultra Fresh juices like the Waistliner (watermelon and pomegranate) and Chillax (raspberry, apple and orange). The Berrylicious Quenchers include Berry Bonanza, which blends three types of berries with apple juice. Then there are the high-fibre, pure-fruit smoothies in the Health Tonic range. With names like Immuni-T, Vitali-T and Mentali-T, they might sound annoying but they're much better for you than a can of cola. Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi, 02 443 7422; Mall of the Emirates, 04 409 9000; Dubai Mall, 04 437 3200.
Instead of heading for the nearest coffee shop for a pick me up, go directly to Pulp Juice Bar and order a Rapid Recovery smoothie. For Dh16 you'll get a revitalising dose of watermelon, pineapple and mint (high in vitamins A and C, and containing fibre, calcium, iron, folic acid and phytochemicals). The smoothies are made with 99 per cent fat-free frozen yoghurt, so even the Dream Date option with dates, bananas, milk, frozen yoghurt and ice has less than two per cent fat. Mall of the Emirates, 04 341 4644, Deira City Centre, 04 295 6136. www.pulpjuice.net.
With more than 200 outlets across the world, Boost has hit upon a winning formula of healthy juices and nutritious snacks. Sometimes the line between fruit smoothie and snack gets blurred, like with the Breakie to Go with banana, toasted muesli, honey, low fat milk, vanilla yoghurt and ice. If you don't want to make a meal of it, try the best-selling Wild Berry Skinny Juice, which combines raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, apple and ice. Another store is scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi in the next few months. Dubai Festival City, 04 232 5444; also at Uptown Mirdif and Sharjah Airport. www.boostjuicebars.com.
When you see Zest's colourfully fruity displays and lime-green and white decor, you'll know you've come to the right place to de-stress. Its Mango Tango is a saucy mix of mango, passion fruit, yoghurt and pineapple. Beatles fans might appreciate the Strawberry Fields smoothie, which includes strawberries, banana and apple, while those with more outlandish tastes might appreciate the Beet Ya smoothie, with beetroot, carrots and apple. Wheatgrass shots are Dh12. Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai, 04 368 5460.
