Home Shopping: Pared-back elegance at Rowen and Wren
Earlier this year, following a discussion one evening over dinner about dream jobs, Lucy Uren and her partner Graeme Purdy decided to join forces to launch a new online home accessories store: Rowen and Wren.
They plunged straight in at the deep end, spending the deposit they had saved up for their first home on launching their business, but luckily, things are already going swimmingly. Lucy's background in design and styling, combined with Graeme's commercial brain and retail career, make them a force to be reckoned with, and their first collection is a big hit with customers worldwide. In fact, they're already working on a second range.
The website is classy and smart, with a pretty little wren logo and a stylish grey colour palette. The couple have sensibly organised their products into three main categories with dreamy, inviting titles: Timeless Living (vintage-inspired buys), Refined Rural (contemporary country accessories) and Distant Home (global finds). The content of all three is much of a muchness to be honest - it's all simple yet chic accessories, linen, wicker, wood and pared-back elegance shot against pale grey walls in cool blue light. But it's all very moreish and you are soon drawn in to this effortlessly stylish world and start to want a slice of it yourself.
I'm not usually one for pointless "objèts", but the ceramic apples and pears (Bramley and Comice varieties, apparently, available in lichen grey or chalk white) are particularly lovely. I'd pop a few under a glass bell jar on a sideboard or fill a bowl with them for a striking, if inedible, table centrepiece.
The cranberry-coloured hand-printed linen Hidden Hare cushion is another favourite of mine. It's playful but still grown-up enough to find a home on a living room armchair. There are some unusual hand-glazed tiles from Toronto that are well worth a peep, too - I'd use one as a trivet in the kitchen - and the hammered Moroccan Kasa star-shaped pendant lights would look fabulous in my hallway. Definitely a site to bookmark.
