In 1970s Britain, Clothkits was a name synonymous with home sewing. Founded in 1968, the family-run firm, initially operated from a kitchen table, sold all-in-one sewing kits with which you could simply and cost-effectively make your own outfits.
In the late 1980s, it became a victim of its own success, vanishing from the radar after being bought out by a large mail-order company. Three years ago, however, it was relaunched and revitalised and is now a unique online store supplying all-in-one kits to make beautifully designed clothes for women and children, plus cushions, bags, soft toys and tapestries and a range of junior craft kits.
In addition to the fabric, most of the kits contain everything you need - thread, buttons or any other necessary haberdashery - to complete your project, plus well-illustrated instructions to guide you through. Best of all, there are no fiddly paper patterns to battle with; all the cutting lines are printed directly on the fabric in a simple format that means even the most needle-challenged novice can make something special.
