If you’re looking for a fun crafts project to do with the kids – one that might even leave you with something that you want to display in your home – try making a button bowl. Granted, it can get a little fiddly and there are no guarantees of success, but who doesn’t love a little DIY challenge every now and again?

You’ll need a selection of buttons, obviously. We opted for an assortment of colours and sizes, but you may prefer a more uniform, monochrome approach. Either way, try to keep the buttons as lightweight as possible.

You’ll also need balloons, good-strength, permanent decoupage glue and a paintbrush.

Start by blowing your balloon up to the size that you’d like your bowl to be. Then cover the bottom half with a liberal coating of glue and start attaching your buttons (spread some glue onto the back of the buttons before placing them on the balloon, for extra sturdiness). Keep going until you’ve created your preferred bowl shape. Once the glue is totally dry, apply another coat over the top surface of your buttons and leave overnight.

Once fully dry, pop your balloon, let all the air out and peel it straight off. You should be left with a pretty little bowl that can take pride of place on your kitchen counter.
