Home improvements: Make your own facial oil

Some handy pointers on making your own moisturiser.

I have probably spent a small fortune on alleged “miracle” creams. None have worked. So I decided to pick the brains of several experts who really know what makes a difference.

The result was a facial oil that I mix up and really works in terms of moisturising but not being greasy. I was directed to “squalene oil”, which is produced from olives, although it has no smell or colour and is very light. It absorbs easily into the skin and is fine to use on all skin types. The second ingredient is evening primrose oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids and well known for helping to balance women’s hormones. Rose essential oil is an excellent moisturiser. And lavender is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and soothing, to help prevent breakouts.

You’ll need a scrupulously clean bottle to store your oil in – an old brown medicine bottle that can protect the oil by keeping out light is perfect. Combine 50ml squalene oil, 50ml evening primrose oil and 25 drops each of rose and lavender essential oils.
