I would normally cringe at the expression “artisanal bakery” but after visiting whEAT in the recently renovated Le Royal Meridien for the first time last week, I decided to let it pass. The cosy yet minimalist decor of this bistro are instantly inviting, with a generous display of bite-sized desserts (for just Dh3 each!) and the smell of freshly baked bread seeping out of the open-door kitchen. From the breakfast (thick slices of whole wheat seed-filled bread topped in a layer of gooey Emmenthal cheese with a large dollop of date jam) to the Sand-wheat-ches (we had the WHEAT Club) and salads (roasted pumpkin with feta, grilled prawns and leaves in honey and ginger oil), the food was flawless. The creative drink mixes, on the other hand, range from spiked shakes to green juices loaded with kale and all sorts of trendy superfoods. Topped off with unusual ice cream flavours such as lemongrass and vegan almond milk, your meal is complete.
