Desserts are having their day in the summer sun. Fresh from Chocolate Chip Day and Macaroon Day in May, June brings us International Churros Day, which falls on June 6. It's just another reason to indulge in these fried dough treats, which can be found on the menus of most Mexican, Spanish and Latin American restaurants in the UAE.

As is its wont, CrazyShakes joint Black Tap will celebrate the dessert with the launch of the Churro Choco Taco milkshake (from Dh62), available at its Abu Dhabi and Dubai branches from June 3. This elaborate-looking and sounding dessert-drink features a vanilla frosting and cinnamon toast crunch rim, topped with two churros, Choco Taco ice cream, whipped cream and a dulce de leche drizzle.

What are churros made of?

The oblong or knotted churros are made from choux, a light pastry dough, which is fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar or sweetened cinnamon powder. The dish can be eaten for breakfast or as dessert, and is usually served with sweet dipping sauces, typically chocolate, caramel (dulce de leche) or coffee (cafe con leche), although some versions feature berry-flavoured dips

Churros can also be filled with cream cheese, custard, chocolate, vanilla or fruit, as well as savoury cheeses.

Historically, the unsweetened churro breadstick originally served as an alternative to fresh bread for shepherds in Spain. The name is thought to come from the Navajo-Churro breed of sheep.
