Food briefs: Dine at Fairmont The Palm

This week's local food news: Le Meridien celebrates Australia Day, Sofra bld offers deals; Marco Pierre White opens new spot at DIFC

The Fairmont The Palm is now open. Located on the trunk of Palm Jumeirah, the five-star hotel boasts a host of dining options, from the Brazilian restaurant Frevo to the pan-Chinese dining spot Ba (scheduled to open next month) and Flow Kitchen, which serves international cuisine, family-style. Le Méridien turns Aussie

Le Méridien Abu Dhabi is celebrating Australia Day on January 26. From 12.30pm, La Brasserie restaurant is offering a Big Aussie BBQ buffet featuring plenty of Australian meat and seafood (Dh88 per person, including three drinks). Guests will be entertained by a live band and choir that have plenty of Australian songs in their repertoire. Call 02 644 6666.

Sofra bld deals

There's plenty going on at Sofra bld at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri in February. On Mondays it's seafood night - sample as many oysters as you can from all over the world for Dh199. Or opt for the seafood selection for the same price. Prefer meat? Steaks and speciality dishes are prepared the rodeo way at live cooking stations on Tuesdays (Dh190). Brunch is served on Fridays and Saturdays.

Brit fare at DIFC

Marco Pierre White's Wheeler's of St James's has recently launched in Dubai and is modelled on the original London restaurant that opened in 1856 and became known for its classic British seafood: smoked salmon, prawn cocktail and Dover sole. Guest chefs at Angélique

Brasserie Angélique, the French restaurant at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, will be hosting two Michelin-starred chefs at Gourmet Abu Dhabi 2013. Mathieu Viannay will oversee a special menu at the restaurant from February 11 to 14 as well as lead masterclasses. Pascal Barbot will host a special menu at the restaurant on February 17.
