Sea Fu, the chic, trademark Asian eatery at Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach, has a delightful, beachside, al fresco spot but recent bad weather sent all diners scurrying into the small indoor space during our recent visit, leaving only the poor DJ shivering outside. Watching staff members take turns struggling to open the exterior door into the wind provided some much needed amusement during the often lengthy waits for service (after asking twice for the bill, we had to stand and feign leaving to get any attention).

The akami carpaccio served as part of a specially curated menu for Dubai Restaurant Week is a generous serving of tuna slices, almost thin enough to see through. The beetroot coriander salad comes as a circular pile of tiny red and golden beetroot chunks topped with a homemade wasabi ice cream which added much-needed textural variety, but lacked a discernible kick. Things improved significantly with the mains.

The forbidden rice is black in colour, and comes both swimming in a rich broth and enticingly flecked with baby octopus parts and edamame beans. Generous slabs of seafood are piled on top — scallops, prawns, calamari — and aggressively but expertly seared. The steamed tofu arrived as one, whopping fillet, soaked in pumpkin sauce and topped with enoki mushrooms and goji berries. The dish is mouth-meltingly light in texture, but a bit too salty for my palate.

There was considerably less subtlety in the two deserts. The simply titled mango dessert comes with tiny mango cubes, mango sorbet and mango jam conspiring stickily together while the cocoa ginger is a rich chocolate mouse served inside a chocolate sphere — Easter egg style — balanced atop a chocolate cake base with chocolate ice cream on the side.
