Beiruti couturier Zuhair Murad dressed opera singer Aida Garifullina, for her Fifa World Cup 2018 Opening performance in Russia, alongside Robbie Williams.

Although the British singer went on to draw criticism for his behaviour, in contrast, the Russian soprano looked every inch the superstar in off-white tulle.

The bespoke gown consisted of a fitted sheath dress, with a lavish overskirt of draped tiers that fell from the hips into a train.

Heavily encrusted around the bodice in hand applied crystal, (including the nude tulle covering Garifullina’s shoulders), the embellishment fell away towards the floor, on both the gown and overskirt. Lavish and beautiful, it carried all the hallmarks of Murad couture.

Considered the absolute apogee of fashion, haute couture is – unfortunately – a much overused term. In practice, it is a legal definition assigned to the few designers invited to join the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. Only members of this organisation have the right to use the term haute couture, of which Zuhair Murad is one. Other members in this region include Rami Al Ali, Ellie Saab and as of 2016, Michael Cinco.
