Zendaya champions Indian couture, wearing Rahul Mishra on the red carpet

The Delhi-based designer's ornate pieces are inspired by the beauty of nature

She's only 23 years old, but American actress Zendaya is already one of the style stars of her generation.

Her bold, unapologetically directional fashion choices mean what she chooses to wear is invariably the highlight of any red carpet she walks down.

This weekend, the former child star repped an Indian designer, wearing a look from Rahul Mishra's couture spring 2020 collection to a New York Fashion Week Bulgari party.

The sheer, hand-embroidered jacket mimics falling leaves, and is crafted from a delicate ivory organza. She wore the statement piece with a pair of classic silk taffeta pants, also by Mishra.

The Delhi-based designer grew up in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, and initially studied physics at university before finding a love for design. He founded his eponymous label in 2008 and was catapulted onto the global fashion stage when he won the internationally renowned Woolmark Prize in 2014.

The designer shared this illustration of Zendaya's look:

Mishra says he focuses on craftsmanship and aims to promote a slow consumerism, which he discussed with The National back in 2015: "My aesthetics are all about detailed simplicity. We use old handmade techniques to create a very modern look that’s functional and fuss-free. My approach to design is to create timeless fashion with a sense of newness attached to it. My philosophy is to not just create fashion for consumption – our system cultivates crafts, cultures and people."

His latest couture collection, as seen on Zendaya, hones in on the beauty of nature. We'd love to see this striking gown, which mimics the layers of our earth's natural bounty, worn on the red carpet soon:
