Paris Haute Couture Week: Zuhair Murad pays homage to Ancient Egypt's queens in collection

The Lebanese designer lit up the runway with a treasure chest of glimmering, golden gowns

Paris was given a Midas touch last night, as one of Lebanon's most renowned designers emblazoned the runway in glittering golds.

Zuhair Murad presented his spring / summer 2020 collection in the French capital on Wednesday evening, turning the city's Hotel Potocko into a sartorial tribute to Ancient's Egypt's rulers, from Nefertiti to Isis.

The Ras Baalbek-born couturier dedicated his collection to queens "who left a mark on history by their beauty and power", sending down the catwalk a series of glimmering, elaborate gowns richly embellished in metallic adornments.

"As a reverence to the Sun God, evenings gowns are adorned with capes, with incandescent gilding and crystals, for a sensuous yet architectural effect," the designer added on Instagram.

From floor-skimming dresses in deep gold to jewel-dotted two-pieces that took inspiration from the silhouettes of the ancient kingdoms, pieces blended both a romantic feminism and a contemporary sensibiltity.

The collection was also punctuated with shades of soft blushes, azure and crimson, using rich brocards, silk tulles, duchess satins and glittering Lurex.

Paris Haute Couture Week draws to a close in the French capital today.
