The award-winning menswear label Casablanca has unveiled a new women’s line in conjunction with Net-a-Porter.

Launched in 2019 by French-Moroccan designer Charaf Tajer, and named after the city where his parents met, this fledgling label is already known for its slinky leisurewear, occupying the space between what it describes as “the clay courts of Stade Roland Garross and the sunbaked terraces of North Africa”.

In reality, this means rich patterning on Cuban shirts, silken tops and breezy shorts, in a palette of warm terracottas and faded pastels, offset with crisp white.

As upscale leisurewear for lounging, this luxe label has already earned fans such as DJ Khaled and Burna Boy, and now that same feel has been translated into womenswear.

The relaxed yet sporty silhouettes have been cut for women, and include a cropped pink denim jacket decorated with Dalmatian puppies playing with oranges, and a pin-tuck Cuban shirt embroidered with cloud-topped mountains.

A silk twill robe is covered in old-fashioned drawings of wolves, sea creatures and signs of the zodiac in a beautiful melange. To give symmetry across the label, all the motifs have been lifted from the men’s autumn / winter 2020 collection.

Tajer’s summery aesthetic resulted in the designer being shortlisted for the 2020 LVMH prize. Set up in 2013 as means to support emerging designers, the final of this year’s competition was disrupted by the pandemic, meaning all eight shortlisted designers were named joint winners, sharing the €300,000 (Dh1.3 million) prize.

The label has also this year collaborated with New Balance on sneakers that launched in April, while past projects have included creating a collection for Off-White and consulting for Supreme.
