Her performance at the 2019 Grammys was lauded by stars such as Lady Gaga and Diddy, but one fashion designer has a complaint about Janelle Monae's appearance at Sunday night's awards.

Dead Lotus Couture, a London label founded by Italian-Japanese designer Nange Magro, has accused the Dirty Computer star of plagiarising items from its 2015 collection for her show.

Monae, who was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Music Video at the ceremony, performed her smash hit The Way You Make Me Feel during the show, taking to the stage surrounded by back-up dancers.

For the occasion, the singer sported a black Latex leotard, finished with white Latex braces, belt and a collar, by a currently unknown designer.

Magro, however, claims the design was a close copy of a piece from Dead Lotus Couture's collection, uploading a comparison photo on Instagram. Both designs are crafted in Latex, with the same white and red detailing, although Monae's outfit was styled with black tights rather than white thigh-highs.

"Amazing performance by Janelle at the Grammys. She and her dancers looked great. I'm deeply disappointed, though, that their outfits looked so much like one of Dead Lotus Couture's 2015 classic designs," Magro captioned the post on her label's social media account.

"I could've made it for them if they contacted me. Nobody likes to see unauthorised copies of their original creations - be it in music, art or fashion. I am flattered to be an inspiration for this amazing artist, but not flattered that my original design has been blatantly imitated."

Dead Lotus Couture has previously dressed Monae on several occasions, such as for Refinery29's Turn It Into Art opening night party, when the Pynk singer sported a circular headpiece from the label (above). Monae also donned the brand's Triade Hood in her I Like That music video, released last year. Dead Lotus Couture has also been worn by celebrities including Madonna, Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj.

"At DLC, it's all about respect, truth and creative expression!" finished Magro in her Instagram post. "Peace, love, Nange."

A representative for Monae has not yet responded to requests for comment, according to reports.
