Some of the red carpet's most famous gowns, worn everywhere from the Cannes Film Festival to the Met Gala, have been collected in one American museum for a new exhibition.

The display at the Savannah College of Art and Design's SCAD Museum of Art in Georgia has turned the spotlight on Dubai's designer to the stars, Michael Cinco, in what is the couturier's first solo retrospective in the US.

The Filipino designer, whose atelier is found in Dubai Design District, supplied some of his legendary gowns for the display, which officially launched this month and will run until January 5, next year.

The exhibition gives fans the chance to get an up-close look at Cinco's intricate craftsmanship, which has adorned the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Aishwarya Rai and Jennifer Lopez.

"I never dreamed my clothes would be in a museum, but I'm glad and I'm so lucky," Cinco told The National earlier this year.

Among the dresses on display is the voluminous, fairytale-worthy number worn by Devdas star Rai to the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, a captivating number that led to the Bollywood actress being called a modern-day Cinderella.

Another gown, worn by Rai at Cannes a year later – a crystal-encrusted sheath finished with a statement train designed to resemble a butterfly's wings – also features in the display.

Other gowns on display include the sequined number worn by Paloma Faith to the Met Gala in 2013, a glimmering mini sported by Lady Gaga on TV series American Horror Story and a stained-glass cape donned by Lopez on The Tonight Show in 2016.

Designers previously showcased by the museum include British punk favourite Vivienne Westwood, Venezuelan-born Carolina Herrera and China's Guo Pei.

The venue set its sights on Cinco after his red-carpet designs drew global attention, according to Rafael Gomes, SCAD's director of fashion exhibitions, who curated the exhibition.

"Michael Cinco's craftsmanship, paired with the visual impact of every design, is why we knew he would resonate so well with our students, alumni and the community," he told The National. "In fact, our School of Fashion now offers a course in couture embroidery, and to have these students and so many others from our degree programmes have the opportunity to experience his beautiful finishing techniques and embroidery is really exciting."

The exhibition, which is held in the museum's Andre Leon Talley gallery, "has been completely transformed because of these gowns", Gomes said.

"We also love that we are showing visitors such stunning couture being created outside of Paris."

Cinco was "involved with the SCAD team throughout the entire process", the curator revealed. The designer will travel to Savannah next week to hold an event at the museum.

The designer, who founded his eponymous label in Dubai in 2003, will take part in a conversation with runway coach and America's Next Top Model star J Alexander on Tuesday, November 5.
