The festival, which runs until Friday, November 29, this year is shining on spotlight some of the region's most anticipated works, hosting premieres for films such as Palestinian director Najwa Najjar's divorce drama Between Heaven and Earth and UAE-Lebanese co-production Beirut Terminus by Elie Kamal.

During the opening ceremony, the festival honoured names including British director Terry Gilliam who won the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Egyptian actress Menna Shalaby, who took home the Faten Hamama Excellence Award for her work in cinema.

For the gala evening, several stars championed designer from the region, including Hend Sabry, who wore a softly glimmering gown by Egypt's Marmar Halim.

Tunisian actress Dorra Zaroruk, meanwhile, plumped for a dramatic, full-skirted affair from the Dubai atelier of Michael Cinco. With its intricate embellishment and hint of sparkle, the scoop-backed gown made quite the statement on the red carpet.

The Filipino couturier also dressed Mai Omar for the night, with the Egyptian actress modelling a bead-encrusted mini dress and theatrical feathered train.
