Another year, another optical illusion leaving the internet scratching its collective head. This time, things have taken a luxury twist, as a pair of Louis Vuitton trainers are at the centre of the debate.

It all started when a picture of a pair of custom-made LV Reflective Air Force 1s was shared to Twitter. The picture was posted by Twitter user Jack Sullivan, who seemed baffled by the difference in opinion over what people saw in the picture.

“This is proper messing with my head,” he wrote. “Do you see black or white trainers here?”

The image was taken in the dark, to show off the trainer’s reflective properties. On both the shoe and the box, the brand’s famous LV icon is glowing, but it’s the colour of the shoe that has left people puzzled. Some people are convinced the shoe itself is black, while others see it as white.

“I can only see black trainers with black laces,” said Sullivan. However, another user added, “They are white, duh.”

“‘This is confusing my brain with what people are saying they see”, another said.

Sullivan then decided to conduct a Twitter poll to gauge a definitive answer, and although it’s a close vote, 57.3 per cent of the 600 people who have responded see a black trainer, as opposed to 42.7 per cent who see white.

The trainer, however, is white. It’s thought the bright white of the reflective design and the darkness in the background of the picture skews some people’s perception of the image.

This isn’t the first time such an image has divided the internet. Who could forget ‘The Dress’ of 2015, which caused mass hysteria among thousands who were adamant it was blue and black, while thousands more were certain it was white and gold.
