There are many families around the world spending Mother's Day apart as preventative measures to stem the spread of Covid-19 continue.

And Britain's royal family are sympathetic to those forced to keep away from loved ones due to self-isolation.

In a message published on their social media channels, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared their well wishes for all mothers marking the day, which falls on Sunday, March 22 in the UK.

"To mothers new and old and families spending today together and apart – we are thinking of you all at this difficult time," the post from the office of Prince William and Catherine read.

The couple also shared a selection of images to mark the occasion, including a look at the card Prince George made for the Duchess of Cambridge this year.

The 6-year-old drew a colourful bouquet of flowers, with the petals crafted out of red tissue paper.

The young royal and his sister Princess Charlotte, 4, are believed to be studying from home after their school, London's Thomas's Battersea, moved to remote learning from Friday.

The post also contained an image of a young duchess with her mother, Carole, and another of Princes William and Harry with the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

The final image in the post showed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge giving piggybacks to Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Not pictured was their youngest son, Prince Louis, who will turn 2 next month.

The message follows the duke and duchess's most recent public appearance on Thursday, when they visited emergency workers at the London Ambulance Service 111 Control Room.

The royals later paid tribute to health workers on Instagram, writing that they made the visit to "pass on our personal thanks ... to staff working around the clock to provide care and advice to those that need it most".

The number of positive tests in the UK was more than 5,000 as of Sunday, with 233 deaths and 93 recorded recoveries.

"Not only are NHS staff and emergency workers responding to the needs of the public, they – like the rest of us – are concerned about their families, friends and loved ones," the post on the Kensington Royal account added.

"They need our support as much as we need theirs. All of us have a part to play if we’re going to protect the most vulnerable. That means acting on the latest expert advice, staying home if we or those we live with have symptoms, and avoiding non-essential contact to help reduce the spread of the virus."
