Individualism made the US great

A reader says the late Steve Jobs is the perfect example of how America has flourished through capitalism. Other letter topics: LivingSocial's exit from the UAE, small change and the stolen baby drama.

LivingSocial to blame for its own demise in UAE

Regarding LivingSocial's dying embers in region (August 20), the rebranding from GoNabit didn't help.

GoNabit, as the first service of its kind here, was very recognisable, and had some major moxie as a beloved local brand with a high "cool" quotient backed up by great service and value.

Once it was absorbed into LivingSocial, people didn't know what it was any more.

It's sad to see the parent brand giving up on it so soon, but think what it's like with new employees joining a cash-strapped company - last in, first out. N Sonega, Sharjah

I have gone back to using Cobone and, so far, I've had no problems there.

I've honestly never heard of LivingSocial. Aziza Al Busaidy, Dubai

A big deal over small change

Regarding A legal right to ask for the money (August 19), I am sure I have benefited more than the supermarkets in the rounding up or down of bills.

I find it an eminently sane process. Please don't force the cashiers to give each customer exactly the right change down to the last few fils. Life is too short.

Mark Fisher, Abu Dhabi

This happens regularly at Adnoc's grocery stores: the cashiers have no qualms about telling customers they have no change to give back - especially when it comes to 25 fils coins.

I say, show me the money.

Fahad Hassan, Abu Dhabi

Individualism made US great

I refer to James Zogby's article, Political boasting misses the point of America's history (August 19). The reason why America is an exceptional nation is to be found in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

The nation is founded on individualism because its founding fathers understood what a tremendous force that would be in this world.

Economically, it prospers from free trade and profits - capitalism. Ever wonder why normal individuals with great ideas - such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg - have flourished in the US?

Why is it that the US is the only country to have put a man on the moon? I suspect Mr Zogby would answer "dumb luck".

Collectivism and altruism - preached at the 1984 Democratic Convention and with the party's current incessant repetition of "fair share" - are its opposite, because they sacrifice individual rights (property rights as well as income and profits) for the "greater good". Nicholas York, Abu Dhabi

Partial refund deal not good enough

Tower investors offered partial refunds (August 20) is not satisfactory. I would never accept such an offer if I was in that position.

They should either offer a full refund or deliver what they promised to deliver. News like this has far-reaching consequences to the reputation of Abu Dhabi as a safe place for investment.

Laws should be put in place to deal with such situations in a just way.

Ziad Q, Abu Dhabi

Happy ending for baby-in-car drama

Regarding Thieves steal car with baby inside (August 20), engine running or not, the baby should not have been left alone in the car.

I was glad to see a happy ending to an otherwise horrible event.

India must act on Assam violence

Given the recent attacks and violence in the state of Assam (Thousands flee south Indian cities in fear, August 17), I believe the Indian government should protect these people.

K Ragavan, India

Recycling? It's a thankless task

In reference to Recycling? Green households have an app for that (August 16), we've been recycling for a very long time, taking all our recycling to the nearest centre.

Nobody ever thanked us and we didn't do it for reward.

Pauline Keith, Dubai

A great step up for young women

Students set to learn the New York state of mind (August 14) is an excellent article about the Sheikh Mohammed Scholars programme.

I hope this cadre of high performers will be used to help increase the number of Emirati women leading federal ministries and serving as ambassadors at embassies in the future.

Jerry McDonald, US
