Up to 400 women are expected to attend SolidariTea Arabia’s third annual party on Wednesday in Dubai, to raise awareness of breast cancer.
SolidariTea, a not-for-profit group, was kick-started by the former British prime minister Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation. Theresa Tsui and Kellie Whitehead run the UAE branch, with the motto “changing the world, one cup at a time”.
The organisation’s free event, the Big Pink Pamper Party, will feature a fashion show by local designers, beauty tips from make-up specialists, a nail-polish station and advice from medical experts and patients who have been successfully treated for breast cancer.
Tsui says: “It has all been done with the kindness and generosity of our supporters – that is why we are not charging for the event.
“We are expecting all sorts of women, from the age of 17 upwards. It is not just for breast cancer survivors. The aim is to raise awareness in a fun way.”
Previous events have raised Dh12,000 each for Brest Friends, a support group founded in 2005 by the surgeon Houriya Kazim.
Organisers will also be asking attendees to donate bras for Ugandan women living in refugee camps. There will be talks from Protect Your Mom, a breast cancer awareness campaign, and Hair for Hope, which seeks cut hair to be made into wigs for cancer sufferers.
