Effort to string up Emirati women archers

Organisers are aiming for a training to competition process to encourage enthusiasts.

ABU DHABI // The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy is organising a first archery tournament in the Emirates for women.

The academy will include six training sessions between October 27 and November 12, where participants will receive professional training at the Al Forsan Sports resort in Abu Dhabi.

The 30 women with the best scores from the training sessions will earn a place in the grand final, which will take place on November 13. Competitors in the training sessions will shoot from 10m but the distance will be increased to 12m at the final.

“This is an initiative designed to introduce archery to young Emirati women who may find they enjoy the sport and wish to keep it up,” said Amal Alfifi, a board member of the academy.

“We aim to encourage sports participation among Emirati women through establishing good habits of attending ongoing training sessions with the added excitement of the possibility of qualifying for a grand final at the conclusion of the practices.

“This initiative also supports the UAE’s ongoing women’s Olympic programmes. The development of elite performance as well as the encouragement of sports participation among Emirati women at a grass-roots level satisfies two of the main philosophies that the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy was built on.”
