The year in tech was dominated by stories about data – both big and small – and how we produce it, use it and manipulate it.

The biggest revelation was Prism, America’s National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance programme which has been monitoring communications online by hacking into and spying on servers around the world belonging to the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Microsoft Corporate news included Twitter’s initial public offering in November and the fate of BlackBerry in the face of cut throat smartphone competition from Apple and Samsung.
