Dubai tourist traffic rises

The number of visitors to Dubai increased by 3% during the third quarter of last year compared to the same period in 2007.

The number of visitors to Dubai increased by three per cent during the third quarter of last year compared to the same period in 2007, according to data released from Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) today. The emirate received 1.79 million visitors between July and September last year, compared to 1.74 million to the same period a year earlier. Yet despite the increase seen in the number of visitors, occupancy levels at hotels dropped to 73 per cent from 85 per cent, indicating a 14 per cent drop compared to the same period in 2007. Hotel apartments occupancy also declined to 76 per cent in the third quarter compared to 86 per cent for the previous year, showing an decrease of 11 per cent. Analysts believe that the excess supply of hotel rooms had caused the rates to decline, as the number of hotels and hotel apartments increased from 444 in 2007 to 486 by the end of September last year, the new data revealed. abakr@thenational.ae
