Temporary ski hill coming to capital
Abu Dhabi is due to get its first taste of skiing this autumn when Ski Dubai brings a temporary real-snow slope to the capital. It will be set up at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre for the three-day Adrenaline Sports Live festival, running from October 8 to 10. Majid al Futtaim Leisure, which owns and operates Ski Dubai, the region's first indoor ski resort, based at Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, will maintain it and provide instructors.
"This is the first time that we are taking our slopes to our Abu Dhabi visitors rather than they visiting us," said Mike Mahoney, the general manager of Ski Dubai. The cost of setting up the slope will run into hundreds of thousands of dirhams, according to the festival organiser, UBMi. Real snow will be used, continuously topped up, and the incline will be slight, to cater for beginners. "The benefit for us is to have a festival with innovative fresh ideas," said Matt Tarrant, the show director of Adrenaline Sports Live.
He said he thought there could be sufficient demand for a permanent ski slope in the capital, a project delayed by technical issues at Marina Mall. firstname.lastname@example.org
