DUBAI // Almost 5,000 Chevrolet cars are being recalled because of a suspected brake-pedal defect.

The move affects 4,900 Aveo, Captiva, Epica and Optra models and the GMC Terrain, manufactured between 2007 and 2010.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of consumer protection at the Ministry of Economy, said the ministry was coordinating with General Motors and its UAE agents on the process of withdrawing the vehicles.

The cars were probably manufactured at the American company's South Korean plant.

Jelis, a sales representative at Bin Hamoodah Auto in Abu Dhabi, which has a GMC and Chevrolet showroom, said only a few owners had taken their vehicles in so far.

"It is a problem with the brake programming," he said. "There are chassis numbers, each car has one, we check for them and then see if they are sold by us or another dealer, then we call the customer."

Affected owners should take cars to the showroom for a free part change.

"The recall was made after it was found that there is a possibility for reduced brake performance," said a spokesman for General Motors in the UAE. The dealers have been instructed to look at the ABS module and replace it if required."

In October, Toyota recalled 65,000 Camry, Corolla, RAV4 and Yaris models built between 2006 and 2010, and Sequoias from 2007 and 2008, to fix an electric window defect. If unresolved the fault could have been a fire risk.

The recall followed complaints in the United States about electrical overheating and minor fires after some drivers used commercial lubricant to loosen electric window switches that had become stiff.

In August, Toyota recalled 7,928 Camrys and 319 Aurions in the UAE because of a potential fault in the wheel hose.

Globally, the Japanese company recalled 14 million cars between 2009 and 2010.

In March, BMW recalled almost 7,000 of its 5 and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010 because of a fault in the cable cover in the boot.

It could stop the engine from starting and result in a fire.

It was part of a worldwide recall affecting 1.3 million vehicles.

In February, Porsche and Nissan recalled more than 11,000 cars.

Porsche had to repair 2,910 Cayennes by replacing loose headlights, while 8,730 owners of Nissan Infiniti models QX56 and M, and Nissan Patrol and Juke vehicles, had to book their cars in for a check because of a fault in the fuel rail that could potentially cause a leak.
