Gold iPads set to debut

The world's first gold-plated iPad 3 will soon be available in Dubai.

ABU DHABI // The third-generation iPad has received an expensive makeover from a British company and the 24-carat gold-plated device will soon go on display in Dubai.

The 64-gigabyte iPad, which will retail in the Gulf for more than Dh20,000, was unveiled last month and has been shown to VIPs in the UAE. Produced by Gold and Co London, the custom-made iPad will be showcased at Damas Jewellery in Dubai Mall next week and will be auctioned to raise funds for charity.

Another 250 units will be produced for the region, and a "substantial number" have already been ordered by UAE customers, said Amjad Ali, the chief executive of Gold and Co.

"The Gulf region is one of our biggest markets," Mr Ali said. "In the Gulf, we can probably sell 250 iPads without a problem."

Damas has not yet announced the auction date or which local charities will benefit from the proceeds.

Gold and Co also sells a 24-carat iPhone 4S for US$4,349 (Dh15,974) and a BlackBerry 9000 for US$2,449.

The special iPad will cost Dh20,198.

The gold-plated devices are available from Damas stores in the Middle East, and each product is presented in a luxury handcrafted wooden box.

Last year, Gold and Co released a gold-plated iPad 2, which sold out in the region in six months.
