ABU DHABI // A new monitor at Abu Dhabi International Airport is doing more than just displaying departure and arrival times.

The “augmented reality” screen, measuring 2.5 metres by 4 metres, allows passengers at Terminal 1 to see themselves interact with 3-D images of animals.

The exhibit, the first in the world, is part of a drive to promote the National Geographic Society, the non-profit scientific and educational institute that has its headquarters in Washington DC.

Through such exhibitions and new media, the society has been encouraging geographic education and promoting natural and cultural conservation since 1988.

The giant screen has been on display since the start of this week.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company  estimates more than 40,000 passengers will participate in the display before it ends tomorrow.
