Strategic goal launched Yahsat’s satellite success story
Abu Dhabi’s satellite communications company Yahsat was incorporated in 2007 but its origins date back further as the country pursued a strategic goal of establishing a reliable ICT, or information and communications technology, infrastructure, according to the firm’s chief executive.
“The Yahsat project was pursued for a long time. Technology had evolved at a point 10 years ago that made it possible,” says Masood Mahmood. In 2011, its first satellite Y1A was successfully launched and the company’s second satellite Y1B went into orbit a year later.
Yahsat’s third satellite, Al Yah 3, is planned for delivery by the end of this year with a launch scheduled for early next year.
Yahsat, whose parent is Mubadala, currently provides satellite connectivity across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe in addition to central and south west Asia via its YahClick broadband service, YahService solutions provider, YahLink networking and backhauling capacity and broadcaster Yahlive – a joint venture between Yahsat and SES.
Al Yah 3 will extend coverage to Brazil and more of Africa.
