RAK Ceramics has formed a partnership with a German bathroom fittings company to manufacture taps in Ras al Khaimah and market them to Abu Dhabi's Watersaverscampaign. In a sign of the growing market for environmentally friendly appliances and other "green" products, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) is aiming to have every tap, shower and toilet in Abu Dhabi fitted with water-saving devices within three years. The UAE has one of the highest per capita household rates of water consumption in the world.

RAK Ceramics, which claims to be the world's largest ceramics producer, has joined Kludi of Germany and says its aerator taps save up to 50 per cent on water consumption. The joint venture, called Kludi RAK, will producetaps that save water by maintaining a constant flow regardless of variations in water pressure. The company recently became a member of the Emirates Green Building Council. "We are pleased to time the introduction of our water-efficient aerators in the UAE with the commencement of ambitious water conservation campaigns," said Khater Massaad, the chief executive of RAK Ceramics.

RAK Ceramics said residents of the Emirates consumed as much as 550 litres of water per person per day through activities such as showering, bathing, using toilet facilities and household appliances, washing cars and watering gardens - a rate nearly three times as high as the UN's benchmark rate of 180 litres per person per day. Meanwhile, in Dubai, a mosque recently received a donation of devices that can also cut consumption by up to half from Grohe, another German company that supplies water appliances.
