Abu Dhabi-based Tristar Transport and Contracting will undertake the earthworks for the first phase of the Arabian Canal project in Dubai, which is being developed by Limitless for Dh40.4 billion (US$11bn). Tristar fended off nine local and international bidders for the $2.7bn contract, which will produce one of the world's longest man-made waterways. Work is expected to begin by the end of the week and will involve removing more than 200 million cubic metres of earth, which will then be reused to form landscapes along the waterway's route. Work is expected to take three years.
"Construction of our 75km Arabian Canal is a mammoth task, so we are splitting the earthworks into around 10 different packages," said Ian Raine, the project director for the Arabian Canal at Limitless.
