Nakheel has appointed consultant AE7 to spearhead construction of a Dh5 billion, 20-tower development at Deira Islands in Dubai.

The developer said that the consultant would oversee the design, engineering and construction supervision of its Deira Islands Boulevard project.

It includes 16 blocks of flats, two hotels and two serviced apartment complexes.

Nakheel said that it would release a construction tender for the project, comprising nearly 2,900 apartments and town houses for lease as well as about 1,000 hotel rooms and serviced apartments at the start of 2017 and construction work would be completed in summer 2020.

It said that when completed, Deira Islands Boulevard would cover 9 million square feet surrounding the developer’s planned 6.5 million sq ft Deira Mall shopping centre.

“Deira Islands Boulevard will be the defining landmark of the area traditionally known as ‘Old Dubai’, offering spectacular facilities in a self-sustaining community for more than 10,000 people,” said the Nakheel chairman Ali Rashid Lootah.

Deira Islands was announced by Nakheel in 2013.

The mega-project is a scaled-down version of Palm Deira, which was initially launched in 2004 as an Dh11bn palm-shaped artificial island like Palm Jumeirah that was due to contain up to 8,000 villas.
