Tiger Woods Dubai, a 5.1 million square metres golf community development, yesterday awarded a contract worth Dh582 million (US$158.4m) to Abu Dhabi-based Al Nasr Contracting to carry out infrastructure work at the site in Dubailand. Abdulla al Gurg, the project director, said the development was progressing towards its scheduled completion at the end of next year. "We were the lowest bidder. The total number of bidders was four and the spread was not very big between us," said Said Saade, the general manager of Al Nasr Contracting. Al Nasr will build car parking, street lighting and networks for stormwater drainage, sewage and fire fighting facilities. The company also will set up a reverse osmosis waste water line, in addition to laying water supply networks for the lakes and irrigation.

Established in 1973, Al Nasr is a multi-disciplined contractor with offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It has a workforce of about 3,000 labourers and 1,000 engineers and technicians. Mr Saade said it was too early to start making decisions on matters concerning the global financial crisis. "Now everybody is watching very closely to see how to tackle the challenges that are coming, whether they are related to project distribution, manpower or anything," he said. "We are now a bit more conservative when it comes to the financial side of projects.

"Whenever we are bidding or negotiating a job, we will be much more concerned about the availability of the commitment related to funds and everything else. Government clients now are a much better bet than anybody else." Located at Dubailand, the Tiger Woods Dubai development includes Al Ruwaya, an 18-hole golf course designed by world number one-ranked golfer Tiger Woods, as well as a 12,000 sq metres clubhouse and a 33,400 sq metres hotel.
