Toyota Camry is the most popular secondhand car in the UAE

The Japanese sedan recorded over 1.18 million views on the dubizzle Motors site in 2018

The Toyota Camry is the most-viewed used car online in the UAE, according to a new report from classifieds site dubizzle Motors.

The Japanese car model recorded over 1.18 million page views from users of the car marketplace in 2018, said dubizzle Motors on Tuesday. The Nissan Patrol ranked second with 1.15 million views and the Toyota Land Cruiser third with 1.11 million views. These cars were also among the site’s top-10 listed cars, with the study based on the 210,000 used cars listed on the platform last year.

Amr El Gabry, general manager at dubizzle Motors, said sedans reign in the supply and demand of secondhand cars thanks to the popularity of Toyota’s Camry and Corolla models as well as the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

“In previous years, there has been a clear demand for affordable and reliable SUVs among used car seekers on dubizzle, however, when looking at the 2018 report, we can see that the demand is now more diverse," said Mr El Gabry. "The top 5 cars with the highest number of page views include both SUVs and sedans with premium brands making an appearance, indicating a potentially increased interest in premium used cars,”

The used-car market is popular in the Emirates due to the transient nature of the population and the UAE’s high depreciation rate. According to CarSwitch.com, an online marketplace for certified used cars, new cars in the UAE lose 20 to 30 per cent of their value after the first year and 15 to 20 per cent in the following years.

According to the dubizzle study, 61 per cent of the cars listed on the site in 2018 were for less than Dh60,000, 20 per cent were between Dh60,000 and Dh119,999 and 8 per cent between Dh120,000 and Dh179,999. The remaining 11 per cent of cars listed were over Dh180,000 and included the Mercedes Benz G-Class, S-Class, and the Land Rover Range Rover. The Bugatti Chiron hypercar was the most expensive car listed throughout the year at Dh14.9 million.

The poll also found 68 per cent of respondents are interested in purchasing a car this year, with 65 per cent of those likely to pay in cash. When it came to negotiation, private sellers reported a 13.6 per cent difference between their initial listing price on dubizzle and the actual selling price.
