The growing number of travellers passing through Abu Dhabi for events such as Formula 1 helped drive up airport retail sales up 15 per cent last year, the Abu Dhabi Airports Company announced today.

Retail revenue at Abu Dhabi International Airport reached Dh582 million last year, up 9 per cent from 2009.

This growth was mostly due to the 12 per cent growth in passenger numbers last year, and new shops and retail offerings, such as the Jimmy Choo luxury boutique in the new Terminal 3, an ADAC spokeswoman said.

Terminal 1 has been undergoing a major refurbishment since mid-2010, and is expected to boost sales this year when it opens in April or May, she said.

"We're positive that this (sales) increase will continue to show throughout 2011," said the spokeswoman. "Especially because it was in 2010 that it had an increase, when Terminal one was in half capacity since July. In 2011, during the second quarter, when there is full operation of Terminal 1, we will definitely see an increase."
