DUBAI // Some Etisalat broadband internet connections will be slowed or disrupted by maintenance work until the end of the week.

“Some of our eLife internet customers might notice some change on their internet,” the telecommunications company said.

“We apologise for the inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock to restore normal traffic. We are expecting work to be completed by August 29 or earlier.”

Internet speeds in the Arabian Gulf were slowed in March after an undersea fibre-optic cable was severed off the Egyptian coast.

This was followed by a cyber attack on Spamhaus, the Dutch company that blocks spam and to which many Middle East companies subscribe.

In January 2010, internet connections in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah suffered when Etisalat upgraded its fibre-optic network.

And there were problems throughout the region early in 2008 when five high-speed underwater cables were severed by ships' anchors.
