Emirates Steel is seeking to cater for the offshore oil and gas sector at a time when Abu Dhabi is looking to offshore production to meet new capacity targets.
Emirates Steel all out to keep oil and gas sector supplied
"We are now developing new grades with higher mechanical properties to meet market demand in the oil and gas sector," said Saeed Al Romaithi, Emirates Steel's chief executive.
The company's heavy sections mill in Mussafah can produce up to 1 million tonnes of structural steel per year.
Production of heavy structural steel began recently, and the government-owned company is working to reach full capacity within three years, said Mr Al Romaithi.
The heavy sections mill can forge products suited for the challenging conditions of the offshore oil and gas industry.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has awarded a plethora of contracts to boost offshore production, as the emirate is seeking to increase production capacity from about 2.8 million barrels per day to 3.5 million bpd by the year 2017.
Emirates Steel expects demand for its heavy sections to be strong throughout the Arabian Gulf, with sustained investment into the oil and gas sector predicted.
Most of the heavy sections are currently imported from outside the region, according to the company.
The steel maker has the capacity to produce 3.5 million tonnes of various steel products a year.
