The German transit multinational Thyssenkrupp has been awarded a contract to manufacture, supply, install and maintain more than 500 elevators and escalators for the Red Line North, Green Line and two additional major stations of Doha’s upcoming metro network.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The metro network in Qatar’s capital will consist of four lines: Red, Green, Gold and Blue, with plans for over 100 stations across a total length of more than 200 kilometers. The network will link major locations within the city, including Hamad International Airport, Lusail, West Bay and Education City.

In April, Qatar Rail said more than 37 per cent of work on the nearly 80km first phase of Doha Metro was complete.

“Doha Metro will commence services between the last quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020,” he said.

The first and second phases of Doha Metro are set to have total of about 100 stations, covering about 215km.

Such works as laying of the tracks, signalling and supply of power to facilities are ongoing. The operational testing of the facility is expected in the last quarter of next year.

Besides the Doha Metro, the Qatar Integrated Rail Project also includes plans for a light rail transit system in Lusail and long-distance freight and high-speed passenger rail lines, as part of the GCC-wide rail network.

“We are extremely proud of our continuous participation in Qatar’s infrastructure-driven development, having already supplied almost 400 units for the recently inaugurated Hamad International Airport in Doha,” said Abdul Hamid El Ayoubi, the chief executive of Thyssenkrupp Elevator Middle East.

“Thyssenkrupp has long established itself as the preferred supplier for airport and metro/railway projects in the Middle East with several reference projects in the region, and we look forward to continuing our successful partnerships in the region.”
