Assault met with unanimous clamour

The recent incident involving an Emirati man assaulting an Asian delivery driver provides an example of the darkest form of road rage.

Road rage and aggressive driving blight roads all around the world. In the UAE, the authorities have been trying to tackle these issues through a combination of tougher laws and road safety awareness campaigns.

The recent incident involving an Emirati man assaulting an Asian delivery driver provides an example of the darkest form of road rage.

The assault, captured by a witness and uploaded to YouTube, took place after a minor traffic accident in Dubai. In the video, the Emirati man repeatedly beat the other driver with his agal and punched him until, mercifully, a passer-by intervened and calmed the situation.

The clip has been circulated widely on social media and Dubai Police were quick to respond after more than 40 complaints were filed to their Twitter account.

As The National reported yesterday, authorities arrested a suspect in connection with the attack a few hours after the incident, according to Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, deputy chief of Dubai Police. The matter has now been referred to prosecutors.

With this action, Dubai Police have made it clear this is unacceptable behaviour and that, as Maj Gen Al Mazeina said, despite the alleged attacker being a government official, "no one is above the law".

Maj Gen Al Mazeina also said that such behaviour does not represent the UAE's culture and tradition. That fact was confirmed by the many Emiratis who condemned the attack.

Indeed, the emotions stirred by this case have ensured that the two parties are unlikely to be left to sort out the matter between themselves. Under Article 339 of the UAE penal code, assault that does not result in serious injury carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and up to a Dh10,000 fine.

The case also puts into sharp focus the progress society has made in the past few years in terms of rejecting such behaviour. While the contents of the video clip are disturbing, the overwhelming clamour for the attacker to be brought to justice shows that no one is too important to avoid being brought to account.
