It’s March 2006 and the Dubai International Boat Show has dropped anchor for another year.
These men are standing on the floor of a tower that’s being constructed behind the show precinct. We do not know the name of the tower, but today a cluster of skyscrapers, including the twisting Cayan Tower, sits within that site.
In the background, we can see the west crescent of Palm Jumeirah. It was relatively sparse then, but things have changed. In the years since, hotels such as Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and One & Only The Palm have opened in that area. The boat show started at the very dry Dubai World Trade Centre in 1992 before moving in 2004 to the location we see in this photograph – the Dubai International Marine Club at Mina Seyahi. You can catch this year's show at its new location on Dubai Canal until Saturday.
