It's hard to imagine the Abu Dhabi skyline without Marina Mall and its observation tower, but just a few weeks ago the mall celebrated 17 years. This photo is from 2001, the year it was built. Since its opening, the mall on the Breakwater at the north-west end of the island, has been a link between upmarket Marina Village and the traditional Heritage Village. While it had few neighbours back then, it is now surrounded by the Marina Eye ferris wheel and the Fairmont Marina Resort and Residences, which are still under construction.
The mall was extended in 2005 and has had a few upgrades, it once housed Abu Dhabi's Ikea – now Marks & Spencer – and a small ski hill and ice rink, which is now Bounce trampoline park.
We expect Marina Mall will continue to evolve and maintain its place on the Abu Dhabi shopping scene.
