The 'incendiary' Peter Capaldi is the next Doctor

'I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight,' said the Scottish actor, the 12th to play the Doctor.

The producer and writer Steven Moffat said an “incendiary combination” had been forged with the appointment of Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who.

The Scottish actor, best known as the aggressive political fixer Malcolm Tucker in the sitcom The Thick of It and its film spin-off, In the Loop, was announced on Sunday as the new star of the famed science-fiction series, which will soon celebrate its 50th anniversary.

“One of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on TV,” Moffat said.

The identity of the new Doctor had been the subject of frantic speculation and the revelation was made with fanfare befitting one of Britain’s best-known shows – during a live suppertime broadcast.

Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the Doctor, a galaxy-hopping Time Lord who travels in the Tardis, a time machine shaped like an old-fashioned British police telephone booth. At 55, he’s also the oldest since the first Doctor, William Hartnell.

Capaldi, a fan of the show since childhood, said: “Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege”. “Like the Doctor himself, I find myself in a state of terror and delight,” he said. “It’s wonderful not to keep this secret any more, but it’s been so fantastic.”

Matt Smith, the outgoing Doctor, pre-recorded a message for Capaldi, saying: “Good on you for getting it, because I know he’s both a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. As a fan, I think it’s a canny choice. If I had to pick someone, I’d pick him.”

Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara, Doctor Who’s companion, said: “I’m so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the 12th Doctor. I can’t wait to start this new adventure.”

Armando Ianucci, the creator of The Thick of It, posted on Twitter: “There can’t be a funnier, wiser, more exciting Time Lord than Peter Capaldi. The universe is in great hands.”

Smith will leave after a November episode marking the show’s 50th anniversary and a Christmas special that will see him regenerate into Capaldi. Capaldi’s first full episode will be out next year. – Agencies
