The chickpea or the egg? Lebanese comedian posts hummus photo to 'beat' Maya Diab
It seems even the pop star herself is supporting the mezze in its race, because who doesn't love hummus?
Last week, in a reminder that the internet can sometimes be sublimely arbitrary, a simple photo of an egg (in its shell) beat a picture from Kylie Jenner's account to become Instagram's 'most liked' photo.
The egg snap is currently hovering at around 48.85 million likes, which is approximately the population of Spain. Meanwhile, the previous title holder - a shot of Jenner holding her newborn baby Stormi's hand - has 18.6 million likes (which compares closely to the populations of both Zambia and Kazakhstan).
There's a new food-based challenge in town, however: Dubai-based Lebanese comedian Farid Hobeiche has created his own regional race, asking people to help a bowl of hummus get more likes than pop star Maya Diab's 'outfit of the day' style shots, which hover at around the 150,000 to 200,000 mark, likes wise.
And while the whole thing clearly started as a joke, tongue firmly in cheek, the hummus photo is actually starting to gain traction.
A few days in, the humble bowl of hummus has almost 29,000 likes, while Farid's average posts get around 2,000 likes.
The post has also attracted an encouraging comment from Maya Diab herself, "yalla", the singer wrote: it seems she's being a good sport about it all.
Here are the types of pictures the hummus is competing against:
