Tine Fey and Amy Poehler to host 2021 Golden Globes
The comedic duo hosted the awards show three times together from 2013 to 2015
Barely a week has passed since the 2020 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 5, and the focus is already set on next year’s award ceremony. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts of the 2021 Golden Globes. The comedic duo hosted the awards show three times together from 2013 to 2015. They claimed the 2015 Golden Globes would be the last time they would attend as hosts. Fortunately the Saturday Night Live stars have broken that promise.
“NBC has long been the home to two of the funniest people on the planet – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – and we didn’t want to wait any longer to share the great news that they’ll be hosting the Globes once again,” said Paul Telegdy, chairman of NBC Entertainment, in a statement.
Fey and Poehler have previously worked together on feature films like Sisters, Baby Mamma and Mean Girls. Both are past Golden Globe recipients. Fey has won the award twice for her work on 30 Rock, while Poehler received an award for her lead role in Parks and Recreation.
“There’s no denying that Tina and Amy’s comedic chemistry is infectious,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organisation behind the Golden Globes. “We can’t wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage.”
Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais was back as host for the 2020 awards – his fifth time hosting –which took place at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. He too claimed that it was the last time he would be hosting the ceremony.
The announcement for the new Golden Globe hosts comes at the heels of the news that the Academy Awards would go on without a host this year.
The organisers confirmed that the February ceremony will follow in the format of the landmark 2019 awards. The 2019 Oscars was the first in 30 years to have no host and saw the audience on broadcaster ABC rise to 29.6 million Americans, breaking a four-year trend of falling viewership for the live ceremony.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's best Golden Globes quips
Like Gervais, Fey and Poehler are known for laying into the A-list crowd during the Golden Globes, and have had plenty of stand-out one-liners during their previous presenting stints.
“We are so happy to be back, hosting the Golden Globes for our second time,” Fey said during the 2014 award ceremony. “Because this is Hollywood and if something kind of works, they’ll just keep doing it till everybody hates it.”
During the 2015 ceremony, Poehler took a jab at James Franco’s The Interview, saying: “The biggest story in Hollywood this year was when North Korea threatened an attack if Sony Pictures released The Interview, forcing us all to pretend we wanted to see it.”
"North Korea referred to The Interview as 'absolutely intolerable [and] a wanton act of terror,'" Fey continued. “Even more amazing, it wasn’t the worst review the movie got.”
They are also known for their straight talking quips. During the 2015 ceremony, they said of a then-newlywed George Clooney: ""George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case; was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria; and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight… her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award."
