NatGeo Abu Dhabi announces 'Moments' photo comp winner
Palestinian Mohammed Al Baraway picks up $10,000 annual prize
Mohammed Al Baraway, a 22-year-old aspiring photographer from Gaza, has picked up the top prize at this year's National Geographic Abu Dhabi (NGAD) “Moments” photography competition, beating off around 40,000 total entries, and 64 shortlisted finalists.
The competition, held in partnership with Almarai and Abu Dhabi Media, was this year held with the theme “Stories From Arabia.”
Al Barawi's photograph showed a group of school children playing football in the rubble of a Gaza street. The photographer said of his winning image: “I took this picture at a neighbourhood near where I live in Gaza, of kids who come back from school every day and play football in the middle of rubble, near their homes. The picture sends the message that ‘we love to live and we have hope and see a life ahead of us that includes a bright future.”
Sanjay Raina, general manager and senior vice-president of Fox Networks Groups (FNG), said, "At National Geographic Abu Dhabi, our mission is not only to share stories of exploration, adventure, travel and life through the lens of our photographers and cinematographers, but we want to encourage everyone to go out and be the explorer, the adventurer and the traveler who uncover their moments and bring their stories to the region and to the world. That’s what ‘Moments’ is all about.”
This year’s grand prize winner will have their photograph printed in the National Geographic magazine Arabic edition and is heading to a 10-day photography expedition trip to Italy, where he will be mentored by National Geographic expert photographers, in addition to $10,000 worth of photography equipment.
Al Barawi's photograph will be published exclusively in an upcoming issue of National Geographic.
