Game of Thrones earned a record 32 Emmy nominations for its eighth and final season on Tuesday.

The HBO saga's total eclipsed the all-time series record of 27 nods earned by NYPD Blue in 1994.

The Emmy voters' acclaim stands in sharp contrast to fan reaction to the show's final season, which was labelled "rushed" by some who demanded it be remade. But the show's ratings never faltered for the series, based on George R R Martin's novels, setting new highs for HBO.
A slew of acting nominations for the cast and guest stars, including the show's sole previous winner, Peter Dinklage, helped boost Game of Thrones to a new record of 160 total nominations — breaking its own previous record of 128.

The series dominated in the Supporting actor and actress categories, making up seven of the 13 nominations with the women of the series — including Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Gwendoline Christie, Maisie Williams —  earning the lions share of the nominations.

Stars Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington each earned nominations for Best Lead Actor or Actress in a drama series. Clarke will be competing in a category that is notable for its diversity this year and includes past winner Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder and repeat nominee Sandra Oh for Killing Eve. Oh will have another chance to become the first actress of Asian descent to win the trophy after losing to Claire Foy last year for Netflix's The Crown.

Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was a distant second behind Game of Thrones, with 20 nominations in the comedy categories.
Other top nominees include the nuclear disaster mini-series Chernobyl with 19 nominations and Saturday Night Live with 18. When They See Us, the mini-series that dramatised the Central Park Five case and its aftermath, received 16 bids.
The 71st Emmy Awards will air September 22 on Fox, with the host yet to be announced. Here are the rest of the nominees in key categories:
