Take This Waltz

The actress Sarah Polley's 2006 directorial debut Away From Her dealt with the harrowing effect Alzheimer's has on an ageing married couple. For her follow-up, she turns her attention to the more common - though no less devastating - issue of infidelity.

The actress Sarah Polley's 2006 directorial debut Away From Her dealt with the harrowing effect Alzheimer's has on an ageing married couple. For her follow-up, she turns her attention to the more common - though no less devastating - issue of infidelity.

Williams is Margot, a Toronto-based travel writer married to Rogen's homely cookery book author. When she meets Kirby's artist on a plane trip home, the attraction is instant, and their affair inevitable. Williams is wonderful as the restless Margot - though Rogen (in a rare dramatic outing) doesn't quite convince.

But it's Polley who has unreservedly grown in confidence, as also shown by her very powerful and personal documentary Stories We Tell, shown twice at the ADFF. Aside from a misjudged montage late on, this is a major step forward.
