Sick Elton John cancels run of Las Vegas shows

Elton John is recovering at home following his hospitalisation on Wednesday for a respiratory infection that forced him to cancel a run of Las Vegas performances. John, 65, apologised to fans, saying: "It feels strange not to be able to perform … All I can say is sorry I can't be with you." He is scheduled to tour the UK next month and will release a new album, The Diving Board, later this year.

Lebanese actress in Kanye West film

Kanye West's 30-minute film Cruel Summer, which was made in Doha with the Doha Film Institute and premiered at Cannes, features the Lebanese actress Razan Jammal, who told reporters West is "an amazing person" to work with: "He's so professional. A little shy, very calm, very hard-working." West attended the film's premiere last week with girlfriend Kim Kardashian. Cruel Summer is a love story inspired by his forthcoming album. * AP

Beyoncé returns, US first lady watches

Beyoncé's performance on Saturday in Atlantic City was her first since giving birth in January. "I'm back to business," she told US Weekly. "I'm enjoying being a mother so it's like going back to my old job. It's a little strange." The US first lady Michelle Obama watched with daughters Sasha and Malia. The crowd cheered loudly as the Obamas made their way to their seats. One fan yelled: "This is history!" * AP

Filipino blogger is Top Model's new judge

Tyra Banks has tapped the Filipino fashion blogger Bryan Grey Yambao, aka Bryanboy, as a judge for the new season of America's Next Top Model. Banks recently fired three of her longtime co-stars, Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J Alexander. The web sensation Bryanboy, whose blog has granted him VIP status at fashion shows and features in Vogue magazine, will join the show's new cast members: the model Rob Evans, the celebrity stylist Johnny Wujek and the publicist Kelly Cutrone.

Mexican wins Cannes sidebar prize

After Lucia, by Mexico's Michel Franco, has won the top prize in the Cannes film festival's new talent section, Un Certain Regard. The jury, headed by the British actor Tim Roth, gave second prize to the French film Le Grand Soir by Benoît Delepine, and a special distinction citation to the Bosnian film Djeca (Children of Sarajevo) by Aida Begic. * AP
