Multi-award-winning singer Shreya Ghoshal returns to the UAE this weekend, after attending the South Indian International Movie Awards in Dubai last weekend, to perform at the Emirates Palace as part of Abu Dhabi’s Summer Season. The 31-year-old, who is one of India’s most successful singers, performs in several regional languages, including Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

The early years

Though her career formally began with her 2000 victory in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, a musical reality-TV contest in India, Ghoshal has always been singing. As a child, she would hum along with her mother, also a singer.

In fact, her mother, harmonium in hand, became her first music teacher at the age of four. Later, Goshal studied classical music under professional instructors and went from performing at small local functions to her first major regional competition, the All India Light Vocal Music Competition in New Delhi in 1995.

She won the competition and made her first television appearance soon after, in Awaz Nayi Andaz Wohi on EL TV, in the presence of Kalyanji-Anandji, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra. Ghoshal also won the 75th children’s special episode of the Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV a couple of years later.

Big break

In 1999, Ghoshal appeared on the 200th episode of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and impressed the judges, walking away with a victory that would open many doors for her.

Her family moved to Mumbai to help her build her career in Bollywood, where she trained under Kalyanji and Mukta Bhide.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali then approached her to be the singing voice of Paro in Devdas, a role that was played on screen by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Ghoshal, then 16 years old, recorded five songs for the film (Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka, Bairi Piya, Chalak Chalak, Morey Piya and Dola Re Dola) all of which became superhits.

She won a Filmfare Award, an IIFA and a Zee Cine Award for Best Female Playback Singer (for Dola Re), and a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer (for Bairi Piya). She was one of the youngest recipients ever to win any of these awards, let alone all of them in the same year.

Since then, Ghoshal has gone solo, recording albums and performing in concerts all over the world.

She has also been a judge on reality-TV music shows, including Star Voice of India, X-Factor India, Josco Indian Voice and Indian Idol Junior.

Ghoshal is now one of India’s leading playback superstars. Her awards includes four National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards from 19 nominations. She has appeared in Forbes’ list of the top 100 Indian celebrities and, with more than 24 million likes on Facebook, she ranks sixth among the most prominent Indian personalities on social media.
