One of the UAE’s favourite television comedies is making its stage debut today.

Shaabiat Al Cartoon, the animated series that is broadcast every year during Ramadan, will be recreated on stage at Dubai’s BurJuman shopping mall from today until Saturday with a series of three daily shows.

“It is great to finally come to the stage,” says its creator Haidar Mohammed. “This is another chance to reconnect with our audience who are waiting for the show to return during Ramadan.”

While the television series – which is broadcast on the Sama Dubai channel – is a family affair, the stage recreation is aimed at the younger set. The stripped-down production – running up to 30 minutes – will feature the series’ stalwarts: the Dubai resident Shambee, the shambolic Bedouin Bo Mhayer and a few minor characters.

“It is for the younger fans so the subjects will reflect that,” Mohammed explains. “There will be tighter stories but it is more about the interaction between Shambee and Bo Mhayer.”

Mohammed says the theatre production will continue the series’ theme of educating as well as entertaining. “That is very important to us, especially here because we are performing in a mall and there is a young audience,” he says.

“The themes are many, and include the importance of family and respecting your elders. But it will be told in a funny way, of course.”

Mohammad will observe how the quips are received, and the ones that fly may well end up on the forthcoming season that will be broadcast during Ramadan – in 3-D for the first time.

“Why not? They are all part of our audience so if it works there then I see no problem in including it in the show,” he says. “To be back – and in 3-D – will be great. We are working hard because there are expectations we have to meet.”

Shaabiat Al Cartoon will be performed three times daily at BurJuman mall. Today until Saturday, shows at 6.15pm, 7.15pm and 8.40pm
