The Haitian rapper Rick Ross will be performing in the Middle East for the first time at the Al Badia Golf Course at Dubai Festival City on October 4. Ross’s performance coincides with the forthcoming release of his fifth album Mastermind, which includes a new track with Jay Z. The 37-year-old made his solo artist debut in 2006 with the track Hustlin. He then founded the record label Maybach Music Group, on which he released his albums Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010) and God Forgives, I Don’t (2012). Irrfan Khan to star in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro remake

Irrfan Khan has been signed on to star with the veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in a remake of the 1983 cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. The 46-year-old actor will take on the role of Sudhir Mishra, played by the late Ravi Baswani in the original film directed by Kundan Shah. Khan said the Hindi film industry is getting appreciation even from the international audience. “A good movie is one that touches hearts by crossing the boundaries of country, colour and language, and forces you to think about issues you had not paid attention to earlier,” he said. – The National staff

Japanese animation director Miyazaki retires

Hayao Miyazaki, the Japanese animation director who is often compared to Walt Disney, is retiring after a five-decade career. “Miyazaki has decided that Kaze Tachinu will be his last film and he will now retire,” Koji Hoshino, the head of Studio Ghibli, which was cofounded by Miyazaki, said at the Venice Film Festival. The film, titled The Wind Rises in English, is one of 20 movies competing for the Golden Lion award at the festival. It is Miyazaki’s first film in five years. The 72-year-old’s most famous animated films internationally have been Princess Mononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001). – AFP

Young Indian actor takes on M?F Hussain biopic

A 23-year-old Indian actor has bagged the role of M?F Hussain in My Friend Hussain, a biopic about the late artist. Jatin Sharma, from the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, got the part after the film’s director, Barkha Roy, auditioned “nearly a hundred people over a year”. “It was a tough task – I had lost all hope of getting the right lead for my film,” said Roy. “But when I saw him, I knew.” The film is scheduled to release in India this -weekend. – The National staff

Avenged Sevenfold top British charts

The American heavy-metal band Avenged Sevenfold topped the British album chart for the first time with Hail to the King. The band, who performed on Yas Island last year, have released a sixth studio album that puts an end to the TV talent-show stars Richard and Adam Johnson’s four-week reign at No 1 with their album The Impossible Dream. Naughty Boy missed out on the top spot with Hotel Cabana debuting in second place, followed by Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon. – Reuters
